No Dewan Rakyat special sitting on Monday, says Speaker

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 28 — The special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat proposed to be held on Monday, March 2, will not take place, Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said today.

He said the letter of notification calling for the special sitting of the House, which he received from interim Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, was not in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) of the Dewan Rakyat.

Mohamad Ariff said the letter of notification he received was not in accordance with Standing Order 11(3) because it was not followed by a complete notice of motion.

According to the standing order, the notice and date of the meeting will be issued by me as the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, he said in a statement.

“So far, no notice has been issued,” he said.

Mohamad Ariff said he feels that the need to convene a special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat will be decided after receiving an official proclamation from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the process to elect the prime minister.

“I will continue to monitor current developments and subsequent statements on the notification and then announce the date of the special sitting,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said yesterday that a special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat will be held on March 2 to determine the candidate who has the majority support to be appointed the next prime minister, failing which a snap election will be called.
