MB: State ready to support Putrajaya in facilitating Selangor transport projects

SHAH ALAM, June 2 — Selangor is prepared to assist Putrajaya in developing public transportation projects in the state to increase efficiency that would benefit the public.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the effort encourages the public to use public transportation as outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP)

“It aligns with the objective within 12MP of improving accessibility to public transportation to encourage people to use it instead of their private vehicles.

“This includes projects such as the Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3), Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) and the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to improve the efficiency of public transportation,” he said during the 12MP Mid-Term Review engagement session at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Convention Centre, here yesterday.

Amirudin also said that the Federal government needs to find ways to facilitate the last mile connectivity with public transportation.

“The solution requires various approaches. For example, the use of minibuses, vans, and e-hailing cars. On-demand transit has gained considerable attraction among the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said that the state government aims to achieve a ratio of six public vehicles to four private vehicles as part of its low-carbon city goal by 2030.

He said the target is set through the Selangor Public Development Master Plan, as outlined in the 12MP.

“The state aims to achieve a ratio of 6:4 in the use of public and private vehicles by 2030, which is different from the current situation where it is the opposite.

“This requires a well-planned network and a comprehensive plan to address traffic and meet the state’s low-carbon city aspirations,” he said.

Amirudin also expressed the state administration’s hope that the Federal government can develop transportation infrastructure in the northern region to improve accessibility for the people.

“The northern region of Selangor has not yet been fully connected to the railway network. (But) For example, Hulu Selangor and its nearby areas are now connected by the ECRL.

“But rail transport has not connected the stretch from Klang to Sabak Bernam. Perhaps the government can plan for it, if not in 12MP, maybe in 13MP,” he stated.
