Flood response gets MB’s thumbs up, preventive actions get thumbs down

By Yasmin Ramlan

BANGI, Nov 6 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has expressed his satisfaction with the search and rescue operations in responding to the recent floods affecting various locations in Selangor.

Nevertheless, he was discontented with the efforts taken by the relevant authorities to prevent the floods from happening in the first place, pointing out that sufficient prior notice had been given.

“So far, I’m satisfied with how our search and rescue teams, as well as our temporary relief centres, have responded.

“However, I’m dissatisfied with the precautionary measures taken.

“I want to know how effective these preventive measures taken in flood prone areas are, considering we had issued orders (to prepare for floods) about a month ago,” he said in a press conference after officiating the Kita Selangor book e-vouchers, here, today.

Continuous rain yesterday caused floods in several parts of the Hulu Langat, Sepang and Petaling districts, forcing seven PPS to be activated to shelter displaced victims.

Amirudin said RM500 has been allocated to assist affected families, adding that the authorities are still awaiting a report on the incident to assess preventive measures that can be taken to avoid future floods.

He said investigations will also look into factors contributing to the floods, citing examples of flood-prone areas like Kampung Cemperai in Sepang, where incidents are often attributed to a burst bund.

“This (burst bund) happened in 2021 and I want to investigate if the burst has reoccurred, since we have restructured the bunds.”

Amirudin said state government authorities will also monitor the daily rainfall levels for necessary action.

Earlier today, Selangorkini reported that the Smart Selangor Operation Centre (SSOC) disaster management unit had said 587 individuals from 156 families are currently placed at seven PPS statewide.
