KUALA NERUS, Nov 20 — Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has activated its disaster operations room after floods hit Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu today.
UMT vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said they have also activated their 24-hour hotline to enable the latest information to be channelled to the students and staff.
He said that, as of 9 am today, 20 students affected by the floods had been evacuated to the temporary relief centre at the UMT Sports Centre Hall which has been prepared and equipped with various facilities.
“Some of the areas near the campus, such as Kampung (Kg) Pak Tuyu, Kg Jati, Kg Gong Pak Jin and Kg Tok Jembal, where the students live, were inundated this morning.
“Some areas within the UMT campus were also flooded, causing the UMT Safety Division to use alternative routes to facilitate movement,” he said in a statement today.
Mazlan said the varsity would also provide zakat assistance worth RM100,000 for UMT students and the local community affected by floods while a grant of RM10,000 would be given to non-Muslim students who are also affected.
